Curator 1999-present

 

Annual Valley Wide Student Art Show, Arts in Education Aid Council – an event for public schools that has grown so much in the past ten years that it evolved into an all day family arts festival at the Chatsworth Train Depot.  Over 5,000 people attended in 2010.  Recruited schools, raised the funds through advertising in the show program, direct donations, neighborhood councils, city council members, and in kind donations.  Oversaw 100 volunteers to organize, set up, hang show, serve food, conduct art workshops, and tear down event.  Created the show program.  Did all of the marketing and publicity.  Also produced the performing arts festival where school bands, individual performers, dance groups performed on stage all day.

 

Teen Annual Valley Wide Student Art Show, Arts in Education Aid Council – separate from the family arts festival, this show is for serious art students in middle and high schools.  Three different scholarships from three different art schools are awarded to ribbon winners.  Hire local teen bands who played original music to play the receptions.

 

Art teachers art show.  Oversaw two shows for LAUSD middle and high school art teachers (at Valley Art Institute and the Armory in Pasadena).

 

McGraw-Hill/Glencoe, quarterly art shows of middle and high schools.  Responsible for recruiting, mounting, labeling and cataloguing each show.  Glencoe chose one piece from each show to purchase and frame for their permanent student art collection.

 

VAST (Valley Artists Studio Tour). Modeled after the very successful studio tour in Ojai Valley, we created a tour for San Fernando Valley artists.  Proceeds from ticket sales went to benefit arts education programs.

 

Cartoonist 1984-present

 

Owner and operator of own greeting card company and self syndicated cartoonist. Comic books, calendars, T-Shirts, mugs, buttons, greeting cards.  Comic strips include “Bill’s Friends,” “Pregnant and Paranoid,” “Spike and Mic”, “Addicted Society,” “P.S. I’m a Girl,” “Father Time”, “ART”, and “Road Trip”.

Nonprofit Experience

 

Founder and Executive Director of Arts in Education Aid Council, a nonprofit organization that is restoring the arts to public schools of the San Fernando Valley, one school at a time.  Oversee staff, volunteers, fundraising, public relations and events (annual arts festivals, quarterly public meetings, Arts Education Town Hall in 2007 where 150 arts education leaders from throughout the L.A. area attended, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa delivered opening remarks).  In depth board training.  Served as President of the San Fernando Valley Arts Council for one year, promoting the arts in the San Fernando Valley by bringing various artists, arts activists, businesses, schools, and community members together through various networking meetings and events.  Provided support to local schools for arts programming.  Produced valley arts festivals.  Also served on various other local nonprofit boards (PTA and arts clubs and organizations).

 

Spike was honored to be selected to serve as a “Community Champion” by the Annenberg Foundation’s Alchemy Leadership Training Program.
